Music Play Place

For yet another family birthday, we headed down to a party in Provo. I was planning to go with my sister-in-law Jennifer, but she had a family medical emergency to help with in her extended family come up, so I had a blast taking all four kids on my own. The party was near the dinner hour but didn't include a meal, so we stopped by at the McDonald's nearest to the party.
We had a ton of fun - turns out they recently redid the play place, and it was awesome! The kids had so much fun. Everything made music. They keyboard played when you slid down it, the guitar jammed when you jumped on it etc. It was a blast!

After our fun visit with Ronald McDonald (is he making a comeback?) we headed off to the party for one year old cousin Spencer.

The older kids had a good time playing soccer outside and just running around together. At this point we were four birthday down for the month - only one more to go! ;-)

More May Pictures

Katy , Krista, Rebecca, Jenny, Lynn
May is one birthday after another in our extended family. Then again, so is October and December. January has a couple, March has a few, and so on and so on. I guess that's just what happens when you have a big family, marry into another family, and both families continue to grow...

Anyway, the first birthday of the month was my mom's. She was going to have fun celebrating with my dad, but he got sick and the girls had the opportunity to take over the party fun. We had a great dinner at Red Robbin. It was fun to just hang out with the girls. We always say we'll do it more, but somehow it never seems to be as often as we'd like. Thanks, Mom, for giving us the excuse we needed to get out and play!

My niece Carolyn was the next birthday of the month. She had a massive party with over 20 guests! I was planning on dropping off Ammon and picking up Carolyn's little brother during the party, but instead I ended up staying to help control the crowds. Overall, the party was a huge success. I hope she remembers it always because I don't think she'll get another one that big for a LONG time...

I haven't done it as much as I'd have liked to, but I've still had some fun babysitting opportunities of nieces and nephews this month. I thought my little niece, Kambria, was just so cute hanging out with Grandpa, that I wanted to post this picture of her. It is always so fun to have her hanging out with us.

If I remember the dates correctly, Peter helped Aunt Rebecca celebrate her birthday by roasting marshmellows with her. Sad that the birthday girl only got to have her leg in the picture. Rebecca is awesome at taking advantage of the fire pit in the back yard, and it is always a fun time with her!

Enjoying Spring

It's been a fun month of hanging out in the yard now that the weather is warmer. I just know Peter is going to LOVE this picture I got of him when he is older!

Ammon was pretty interested in the empty snail shell he found. There are all sorts of creatures to be discovered outside!

Most of all I love to see my boys playing together having fun! What a great pair they make. Seeing them hang out together and having fun with each other never fails to warm my heart. What a lucky mom I am!

Getting Out

Continued from Our Hike

There we were up on some rocks watching the rain pour down around us and seeing what was dry land just moments ago suddenly swell with flowing water. Rebecca, Isaiah and Jeremiah were the last ones to make it out of the slots we had just exited and by the time they got out they were literally running through waterfalls crashing down on them.

Everyone was freezing cold and most of us were pretty scared. Jeremiah pulled out his back back and distributed trash bags that we used as rain coats. We all said a prayer as a group (offered by my mom) but the children continued to pray on their own as well. We wondered where the best shelter was, where we were most likely to be hit by lightning, and whether or not we would possibly be able to build a fire. In the midst of all the discussion, I would occassionaly hear Ammon saying, "in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen." I am so proud of our kids for the faith they demonstrated during this frightening time.

After about 5 minutes of being terrified up on the rock, the rain stopped. It occurred to us that we would need to make a run for it to get out. Obviously when it wasn't raining, was the time to go. But we also needed to let some of the water flow through so we sat and waited, hoping that the rain wouldn't start again causing us to miss our chance for escape or that we weren't wasting precious minutes causing us to not get far enough out when the rain began again.
The flow of the water began to lessen and we decided we had to go. Katy and I were both literally sick to our stomaches and wanted to just throw up. Katy didn't want to go through the water, which, in some places was still thigh deep, so I was surprised when all of the sudden she and Kylie were gone. Apparently she had reconciled to the fact that we would have to do this, and, once decided, she wasn't wasting any time. Jeremiah was assigned to get Carolyn out, Rebecca had Isaiah. My mom held up the rear helping anyone who needed it. Normally I would have taken Peter and Andrew would have taken Ammon. But with my back out, I was worthless. Peter was already snuggled up under Andrew's shirt so we decided to keep them together. My Dad offered to help with Ammon.

When we were ready to go, I told Andrew to just run and get Peter out as fast as he could. I knew he would want to stay back to help us, but I just wanted to know that Peter was safe. He took off and stayed just behind Katy the whole way out.

For most of the way out, I went back and forth between keeping up with Andrew and checking back on Ammon and my dad. Rebecca and Isaiah were with us most of the way, and Carolyn, Jeremiah and my mom were behind (obviously not too far behind, because Jeremiah is the one who had the camera and was taking all the pictures).
We were blessed and although the fear and threat of rain loomed over us, we never experienced any additional rainfall. We had seen how quickly that would change our situation, and so I was just driven to move move move as fast as I could to get myself and my family out of there.

Eventually we all made it safely, offered another prayer - this time of gratitude, took a victory picture of our group.
Then we went back to our site and tore down camp.

Our Hike

As we were setting up for camp on Friday night I heard my mom ask, "is this a flash flood danger zone?" The answer was no, but it planted a fear in my mind. We had heard it was going to rain and so when I woke up in the middle of the night to howling wind and a fierce rainstorm, it wasn't so much unexpected - just more worrisome. It took a little while for me to calm my fears and convince myself that this unknown threat really was imaginary and that I should relax and sleep peacefully. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself staying dry and warm. Eventually I fell back asleep.

We were camping just a mile or two beyond the entrance to Little Wild Horse Canyon. Originally the plan had been to hike that in the morning, return to camp for lunch, and then drive out to Goblin Valley for the remainder of the day. When we woke up and found ourselves preparing breakfast in the rain, we considered altering our plan and doing Goblin Valley first instead. But by the time we were ready to leave camp for the day, the rain had stopped. We decided that it did make the most sense to stay near camp so that we could return for lunch and the people who weren't going to stay a second night could pack up and leave directly from Goblin Valley. Logistics won out, and we stayed with the original plan of starting our day with the hike.

Although my tent had kept me warm through the night, my mattress had not been so kind. I woke up with my back completely out. I could hardly walk, bending over to pick up anything was difficult, and carrying children (like Peter who likes to be held) was impossible. We all wondered how I was going to be able to hike. My mom was smart enough to get some medicine in me before hand, and I kept trying to convince everyone (including myself) that I was walking it out, and that my back was going to be fine.

We loaded up two cars of people (my dad and mom, my sisters Katy and Rebecca, Katy's family which includes her husband Jeremiah and three children Carolyn, Kylie and Isaiah, and my family of four - Andrew, Ammon, Peter and myself.) In total we had 12 people: 7 adults (ages 18-56)and 5 children (ages 2-7).

The hike was a lot of fun. As we started out, I noted that we were walking in what looked like a dried up riverbed. My mom made the eery comment that some of the plants were growing sideways as if they had been pushed by rushing water. Those observations were quickly forgotten as we began to enjoy the beautiful terrain we were walking through. Our group spread out. Dad is a fast walker and was up near the front with Jeremiah and Rebecca. Carolyn, Kylie and Ammon had fun running through the canyon. Katy followed along with them, and my mom, who slowed down to take pictures of the lovely scenery, we just ahead of us. Andrew, Peter and I brought up the rear. Andrew took some time to climb the mountainside. Peter started out walking, but tripped on a rock early off and wanted to be carried after that. I went at a slow and steady pace, being considerate of my back.

We got to a point in the hike where we climbed the side of the mountain and the trail narrows so that it couldn't be more than a foot or two wide. You hug the mountain as you go around to the other side of it, and find yourself needing to jump down three foot plus drops. I didn't know whether I should be panicked or relieved that Ammon had done this without me there to keep him safe. I wondered if I would be able to make the drops with my back the way it was, and I questioned whether or not we'd be able to get back up if I did. The advantage of being last in the group is that everyone had found the best way down, and between my dad and my husband offering their hands, I was able to make it down without issue.

At this point in the hike we found ourselves in what we would later consider a nice opening. Everyone had gathered back together again to make sure we all made it over the ridge, and to take a little break. The sun had come out and we were hot. We decided that since we weren't doing the loop, but would be coming back out the same way, we should go ahead and leave our coats up high in a place that was covered and somewhat hidden from immediate view. Peter was wearing his T-Shirt, his sweatshirt and his coat. We knew he must be burning up, but we had to fight him to get those top two layers off. Still, I was worried about him being too hot and insisted.

We started our hike again and immediately were walking through slot canyons. The only experience I have ever had to compare to these is a place in St George that my brother-in-law Jeremiah has taken us to called The Crack which gets so narrow that people have actually gotten stuck trying to get through. These slots were a bit wider and it was fun!

We got through one slot area only to realize that we were going right into another one. And after that, another one. About the 4th time of entering the slots, my sister started mentioning her claustriphobia. I was actually surprised that she and my dad had been doing so well and not mentioned that sooner. Andrew had carried Peter this whole time and as the slots narrowed even more, he tried to get Peter to walk just so his head wouldn't get banged against the sides of the canyon. Peter refused to walk, though, and Andrew considered just turning around and taking Peter back out. We decided against that, but a while later Katy brought up her concern again. She also mentioned that she had been hearing a sound and wondered if it was thunder.

No one in the group (other than Katy) had heard the rumblings she was talking about, but as she mentioned wanting to turn around and go back, I jumped right on board and said that Andrew and Peter were also ready to go, so maybe we should get Ammon back with us and head on out. Jeremiah said we were about 3/4 of the way and that since we were so close, he wanted to keep going. He had Isaiah with him and Rebecca and my dad also wanted to continue on. So, it was decided that we would split up - some heading back out, and others continuing on to the opening that marked the end of the hike.

Somewhere during all of this discussion, my niece Carolyn went to her mom and mentioned that she had a really bad feeling and that if Jeremiah went on without us, something bad would happen. Katy told Carolyn to tell Jeremiah about that feeling. At this point I am not sure what happened in what order. We had turned back and were heading out of the canyon when we all started hearing that thunder sound Katy had previously reported. Some of us got a little nervous and decided we needed to just get out of there. As we started to run, raindrops began falling.

Katy and I were the first ones into the first clearing. I had Ammon and I think both Carolyn and Kylie were with her. Andrew was right on my heels with Peter. We looked towards the next slots and back at our feet (in an open area) and realized that although it had been raining for only 3-5 minutes, we were already standing in rushing water. We looked towards the next set of slots and realized that the water was easily 6+ inches. Even more terrifying was to see that it was filling up as water came crashing down the sides of the canyon walls, in from the opening, and down from the rain. Katy and I suddenly realized that we did not have time to get out if the rain continued. We stopped everyone and started climbing to higher ground.

Having never been in a flash flood scenario, or even knowing what nature was capable of, we were terrified! We climbed a good 15 feet in the opening, but I still wondered if we were high enough. We had no idea how long the rain would last or how bad this would get. All we knew was that we were trapped.

Exploring

We arrived at our destination and followed Jeremiah in to the entrance of the Little Wild Horse Canyon hike. The location didn't mean much to us at the time - mostly we stopped because there were bathrooms. Jeremiah explained to us that it was an awesome hike and we would be doing it the next day. Little did we know what we'd be getting ourselves into!!! (More on that coming in the next post.)
Everyone was excited to get out of the car. (Don't you just love Peter's "exicited" look?) There was lots of running around and exploring.

It started out with just some mild playing in the dirt and looking around.

Then Ammon decided to follow the example of his courageous cousin Carolyn, and start climbing the mountain!

Andrew thought that it looked like lots of fun, so he joined in.

Pretty soon Andrew was herding the three oldest kids (Carolyn, Ammon and Kylie) up the side of the mountain. It made me feel better to have him up there with them. They all had a blast!

Peter and Isaiah stayed down below with the other three adults, but those older kids just kept climbing!

Eventually they made it to the top - and back again. Most importantly, they did it safely. After that, we went to join up with my parents/Rebecca, and set up camp. Our weekend getaway was officially underway!

Road Trip

We started May off with a fun road trip down to South East Utah. We love road trips and had a blast heading down to the Goblin Valley area. My parents were also coming in their MotorHome with my 18 year old sister Rebecca. My other sister Katy was heading down with her family as well. We got to a rest stop before Price and hoped my sister Katy would see us and pull over. We were trying to get into a better caravan since the phone reception was bad through that part of the drive. It worked! She saw us and they even had walkie talkies to use. Ammon was thrilled!
Although Ammon thought he should be the master of the walkie talkies, he never really figured out how to use them correctly. He had fun trying, though. We continued on our drive, but got out for one more stop along the way because Isaiah was having a hard time with the pressure on his ears. It gave everyone a chance to aventure on this little cliff walk here. It made me nervous having my children so near a cliff edge, so I went and sat in the car. When Andrew got back he said, "Sometimes you just have to let boys be boys." I reminded him that, while the sentiments he shared may be true, I certainly don't have to watch! I was glad they had all made it back to the car and we continued on our trip!

Ammon's School BBQ

Ammon's class finished their chapter about Australia by having a "barbie" (BBQ) and invited the parents to join the fun. It was a nice afternoon and I enjoyed being out in the sun. Ammon thought it was pretty cool to roast his own hotdog. In fact, he enjoyed it so much that he prepared a hotdog for me too. He came over with two hotdogs. One was SMOTHERED in ketchup. The other had mustard. The mustard one was for me. Uh... I don't LIKE mustard. But it was a sweet gesture. I have to admit that it was sweet to see that he thought to provide for his mommy like that.
Of course Peter and Kylie ended up sitting together. The BBQ was combined for the afternoon class and the morning class so we had lots of cousins there by the time we have the three kids attending school and their siblings. It was great! Kylie's cousin on the other side also attends school there. Her Uncle on that side is also named Andrew and my sister asked him, "Hey Andrew, where's your wife?" A few minutes later Ammon wanted to make sure Katy was clear. He pointed to me and said, "This is my Daddy's wife!"

Did I mention that Ammon's hotdog was OOOZING ketchup? It was pretty gross. But he seemed to enjoy it anyway.

After we ate, the kids had fun playing in the "school-yard". Ammon had a fun time swinging with his cousin Isaiah.

Play Group

On Tuesday mornings Ammon goes to school and Peter and I go to play group. Last month we were getting a little over eager for warm weather to arrive, so here we are playing outside at 9:00 in the morning. It was still a little cool. The wind was bitter. But we still had fun.
Peter LOVES his cousin Kylie (who doesn't usually strangle him on the way down the slide). He absolutely worships this girl and I love seeing them spend time together. Their personalities seem to gel together just right and I love their tenderness.

Fortunately, we planned to go inside half way through our playgroup time, so we did get out of the cold. We ended up in the Riverton Library for a fun puppetshow. Kylie had fun holding one of the monkeys that Mr Crocodile ended up coming to eat.

Zoo

A couple of weeks ago my sister-in-law called and invited Peter and me to go to the zoo with her and my niece Kambria. I almost didn't go and had to cancel an appointment to make it work, but am glad for the trip. Krista brought the wagon and Peter LOVED it. He didn't ever want to get out so poor Krista ended up pulling him around all day even though Kambria spent most of her time walking.
It was the perfect day for the zoo. The weather was just right, the crowds were non-existant, and the animals all seemed especially close to us. I got a better look at rhinos, elephants, the cougar and the giraffes than I think I ever have. Especially the rhinos. It was fun.

Peter and Kambria both really seemed to like the giraffes. It was cute to watch them get excited about seeing the animals.

Taking the picture below was an interesting experience because once on this little statue, Kambria didn't want to leave. On the other hand, Peter was furious to have been removed from the stroller and pretty much cried until he was back in it. So it was a rough experience for the kids on both ends. Peter, because he actually had to get on it, and Kambria, because eventually she had to leave.

Overall it was a really fun outing (although quick since we did it while Ammon was at school and I needed to get back for him) and I hope we get to do it again soon! Thanks Krista!

Family Proclamation

The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children. All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally. The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed. We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets. We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Hinckley as part of his message at the General Relief Society Meeting held September 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
