Visitor

We had a great time with Dad visiting. It was fun to have him down. He has been worried about whether or not Yuma was a habitable place for his daughter and grandchildren and he think he left really pleased with where we are.

The visit was a quick one. He got here on Friday night just after Andy had left to work. I took him on a little tour around our "foothills" area and showed off our grocery center, the Curves I joined, and our Wal-Mart. We needed a couple of things for dinner so we ran into the Wal-Mart really quickly.

We were just getting to the main door of the store when I realized something didn't feel right. It took me a second but I realized that I had let Ammon come out of the house with his Border Patrol shirt on (big no-no and way against the rules - I think I still haven't admitted to Andy that I did this). I handed off Peter to my dad and rushed Ammon back to the car where we had an extra shirt. But I had done my cleaning and gotten the extra shirt out of the car at home, so I had no idea what I should do. I opened the trunk and found Ammon's goofy sweatshirt. It was over 100 degrees outside, but Ammon knows that we don't wear that shirt in public and was quite agreeable to us covering it up with the sweatshirt. I tried to roll up the sleeves and make it as comfortable as possible, but he loves his sweatshirt and he pulled the sleeves back down and even put the hood on. Crazy boy.

We had a nice dinner and I even changed the menu for Dad's benefit but when he checked his blood that night he looked at me and said, "You are trying to kill me". Maybe we should have just had the pasta instead of the chicken...

Everyone was exhausted. This was the day after my rough night with the boys, and dad had been going from one trip to another so we all called it a pretty early night.

Andy's shift got bumped up an hour so he was home by 3:30 AM instead of 4:30 and so by 9:30 he was up and hanging out with us. Dad wanted to do some exploring and go see the Colorado River. I have to say that his part of the day was kind of a bust. It was just the bling leading the blind as we went into the main part of Yuma and tried to find something interesting to show Dad. We never did get to take him to the parks and places we have been because we needed to get Andy back in time to sleep some more and get ready for work.

After Andy left to work we went exploring again. One thing we had wanted to locate was the library. We found it, but only minutes before it closed. I still went in and got some good information about when story time is etc, but we still wanted to do more looking around so I decided to take him down to Yuma Palms.

We got sidetracked on the way and decided to also look up the college/university campus (it is a shared campus). That took a while, but we found our way around. At Jordan Palms we went to Jack in the Box for dinner.

Little Peter is adorable. For all his calm demeaner, he is also very opinionated and knows what he wants. He saw my milkshake and started whining for one. It took several minutes before I realized what was wrong. As soon as I gave him some of the milkshake, he was happy (although insistent that he got constant refills until it was all gone).

At home the guys played some hoops and then it was off to bed. Dad and I started a cribbage tournament but called it good after we each won a game and figured we could play our tie breaker the next day.

Sunday was church and games. Dad one the tie breaker with me on the last hole. We started the hand with him about 8 points out and me about 6. We pegged the whole way and it literally got down to the last two cards. I was going to win with "last card" but Dad stole away my victory with a "fifteen". And of course he trashed me at Gin Rummy. I got mine in the end, though, when I hammered both Dad and Andy at Ticket to Ride.

Dad left early Monday morning. I realized that I had some pictures of him with Ammon but none with Peter so before heading to bed I tried to get some of him with both boys. As you can see from the one I posted, it didn't go to well. Peter was exhausted and crabby and Ammon was hyper as always. We really did have a great time though, and I was sad to see Dad go.

Family Proclamation

The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children. All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally. The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed. We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets. We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Hinckley as part of his message at the General Relief Society Meeting held September 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
