Settling In

After our mini-vacation, we arrived back in Yuma to really get settled into our new life. Peggy and Derrick had driven down our 2nd car and Jen came down from Phoenix with her friend and her two children so we had a houseful which was both helpful and chaotic. We had a fun time situating things between hanging out and keeping the kids happy. I'll admit - four children and six adults in a partially moved-in house can be a lot but I am glad everyone came. It was lots of fun.

Some of the highlights of Saturday were Andy and Derrick picking out, purchasing and setting up our new TV stand. Yes - I did say that they picked it out. I thought that was a slightly bold and scary prospect, but they did a great job and I am very happy with what they found. Peggy took the three Jennifer's (me, SIL Jen and her friend Jenny Horrocks) to a local quilt shop where she was able to meet in person someone who is an online longarming quilt friend.

On Sunday we went to church and had a great time meeting various people in the ward. Just to make our first day memorable, the fire alarm went off a few minutes into Sunday School and we spent much of that hour outside waiting for the fire department to give us the green light to go back in. What an adventure! It worked out ok, though, because it gave us a chance to meet some people and just mingle a little bit more than we would have if we were sitting in class.

On Sunday night Crystal - the neighbor who has been so helpful and instrumental in us being where we are, stopped by to remind us to pack Andy a lunch for work the next day and a few other useful bits of info. We really hit the jackpot being neighbors and friends with her and her family!

On Monday Andy had his first day. For the most part he was issued gear that he hadn't received yet. He said it was a long and boring other than all the cool new toys they were given. He was told he had Tuesday off and to come back ready to work on Wednesday at 6:00 PM. He was also set up to work 10 hour shifts immediately which is good financially.

Peggy and Derrick were still in town and they came over to watch the boys while I ran errands in town. First stop was to register the car. I was glad that I was with Andy when we did the other car - it helped me know exactly what to do. After that I found Sam's Club and did our first real grocery shopping to stock up the house with food.

Once I arrived home, Peggy and Derrick helped me with various other random chores. We got our internet connected and Derrick helped set up the wireless. Peggy ran to the store to get batteries and came home with a load of other things that we needed like plastic baggies and brown paper lunch bags. They were very helpful all weekend!

Andy got home just in time to turn around and take his parents to the airport. Ammon went with him for the ride. Soon after that we went over to Crystal's house for dinner. We had a great time visiting with them and getting to know them better. Her husband was a wealth of information for Andy about job stuff, and I had a fun time just having girl-talk time. She made a great mid-west meal of beans and cornbread; they have just been so wonderful to us in so many ways! I wish we could have stayed later, but our boys were getting tired and past their bedtime when we finally gave in and headed home to put them to bed.

Tuesday was our first day in Yuma alone as a family without any major move-in errands, so it was kind of nice that Andy didn't have to work. I honestly don't remember much of what we did that day - and it was annoying when our brand new internet connected decided to not work for us! Other than that, things were good. We had most of Wednesday to hang out, although Andy took a nap in the afternoon to prepare for his night shift, and the next thing we knew, it was time for Andy to head to work, and the real BP life was ready to begin!

Family Proclamation

The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children. All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally. The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed. We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets. We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Hinckley as part of his message at the General Relief Society Meeting held September 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
